What Does a Healthcare Chaplain Do?

For Patients and Families

When facing serious illness, grief, and loss, patients and families confront deeply personal questions about meaning, identity, and what matters most. Healthcare chaplains help them navigate these moments by:

  • Assessing unmet spiritual needs using evidence-based tools like the PC-7
  • Providing a safe space to express fear, grief, or hope without judgment
  • Facilitating conversations about values, goals of care, and difficult decisions
  • Connecting people to inner sources of meaning, strength, and resilience
  • Surfacing cultural and religious beliefs that shape care preferences

Within Care Teams

When spiritual or emotional concerns arise, clinicians often feel under-equipped or stretched too thin to address them fully. Healthcare chaplains integrate into care teams to:

  • Receive referrals directly from nursing, social work, providers, or care managers
  • Document each encounter in alignment with workflows and quality reporting needs
  • Facilitate or support goals of care discussions with patients and families
  • Offer guidance to clinical staff around patients’ religious, cultural, or ethical considerations
  • Support team wellbeing by providing emotional debriefing and a compassionate presence
