“We wish we could staff every hospital with a chaplain, but we either can’t afford it or can’t find well-qualified providers. SpirituWell helps us fill our gaps—especially on nights, weekends, and at smaller hospitals.””

Filling the Coverage Gaps in Inpatient Spiritual Care

How a regional hospital system partnered with SpirituWell to extend chaplain access to a rural hospital and infusion center to reduce distress during off-hours and maintain the highest level of care.

A faith-based, nonprofit health system operating across multiple states needed a way to provide consistent spiritual care in a 150-bed hospital that includes onsite ambulatory clinics and specialty treatment centers. Like many hospitals, they lacked staff chaplain coverage on nights and weekends—yet the nursing team continued to see patients in emotional or spiritual distress during off-hours, especially following difficult diagnoses, losses, and end-of-life conversations.

At the same time, the organization remained committed to meeting both patient needs and system-level quality goals, including patient experience (CAHPS), health equity, and holistic care standards required by The Joint Commission.

They turned to SpirituWell to ensure 24/7 access to high-quality, compassionate chaplaincy—without compromising on clinical integration, documentation, or responsiveness. Referrals flow directly from nursing staff, giving patients and families access to professional spiritual support when it’s needed most.

How SpirituWell is Making a Difference

To meet the needs of hospitalized patients during moments of grief, crisis, and serious illness, SpirituWell delivers high-quality virtual chaplaincy through scheduled and on-demand visits—filling nights, weekends, and early morning gaps in spiritual care. Referrals come directly from nursing staff through an established workflow, and each patient encounter includes a professional chaplain assessment, personalized care plan, and timely documentation shared with the care team.

In addition to expanding 24/7 access across inpatient units, SpirituWell now provides daytime chaplain coverage to the hospital’s outpatient infusion center—where previously no spiritual care services were available. Through this partnership, patients who once had limited or no access to chaplains now receive compassionate, clinically integrated support whenever and wherever they need it most. SpirituWell enables the hospital to uphold its mission and quality standards while alleviating staffing constraints and supporting whole-person care.

Social workers observe that SpirituWell helps patients:

  • Grieve and process their “new normal” after starting dialysis treatment
  • Cope with the emotional toll of dialysis, which many describe as a “part-time job”
  • Feel like a whole person again—not just a medical patient
  • Navigate deeply personal decisions about transplants, caregiving, and end-of-life care
  • Reconnect with sources of meaning, identity, and hope in the face of chronic illness
